All right, y’all, here’s the scoop:

It’s hot in Arizona these days. DAMN hot. When we moved here, I understood on a cognitive level that the summers would be hot but this…I mean…it’s just…the mind boggles.

But good news! For those of you tapping your foot and wondering impatiently why it’s taking so long for my next book to come out (FASHIONABLY LATE, hitting shelves in January 2006; I’m writing as fast as I can, I promise!), you can pre-order this Pride and Prejudice anthology, featuring an original Beth Kendrick essay. The anthology’s out in September—just a few short weeks away!

In the meantime, here is a true story from one of my book signings last month:

Okay, so in FASHIONABLY LATE, the hero and heroine strike up a competition to see who can come up with the most cringe-worthy pick-up line. I collected some pretty horrific ones from friends…little did I know that the piece de resistance was waiting for me at Barnes & Noble.

A man approached me at my little signing table and handed me his business card (it said: "Sir Brandon, Man About Town". For reals) and started hitting on me. I didn't take this as any kind of testament to my wit and beauty; I suspect Sir Brandon is the kind of guy who hits on anything that's not actively running away. So anyway, I just sat there, smiling and nodding politely, and he busted out the pick-up line to end all pick-up lines:

"You have beautiful eyes. They should bottle them and sell them at Walgreen's."

He maintained a straight face while saying this.

As soon as I got home, I emailed my editor and told her I was gonna need the FASHIONABLY LATE galleys back, `cause that line is going in the book.

Oh, and P.S.: "Walgreen's?" WTH? My bottled eyes couldn't even get into Sephora?

Hmph.
